Drawing: Cup and Bowl

Cup and Bowl 1986.

My first class as an art student was drawing. This piece was done in charcoal for an assignment, maybe as a final project, but it was so long ago, that I can’t be sure. Unfortunately I didn’t keep many of my projects from this class. For many students this was their first art studio class as well, as such, there was a kind of atmosphere totally different from what I encountered in my classes as a physics major.

Our final project involved a trip to the Cloisters. I don’t believe anyone in my class, including myself, had ever been there before. What an experience! It is hard to believe, when I look back now, how insulated we all where. Even though the college was in New Jersey, I, and many of my fellow students had never been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, nor the Cloisters. We had left each of our small high school worlds for one only slightly larger.
